Feeding wild birds is one of the UK's favourite pastimes, and it's easier than you think to attract a wonderful variety of species to your garden.
What to Feed
Sunflower hearts are the universal favourite, attracting everything from blue tits to greenfinches. Niger seeds are perfect for goldfinches, while ground-feeding birds like robins prefer mealworms.
Seasonal Feeding
In winter, high-fat foods like suet blocks provide essential energy. During spring and summer, avoid whole peanuts as they can choke nestlings — use peanut granules instead.
Feeder Placement
Place feeders near cover like hedges or bushes so birds can quickly escape predators. Keep them at least 2 metres from fences to prevent cat ambushes.
